As a public benefit corporation, MPOWER is always striving to make our business an engine for positive change. That’s why we launched the MPOWER MBA Scholarship – to help bright, driven minds advance social good through business excellence.

Our MBA Scholarship program recognizes graduate business students whose career goals center around social benefit. Accordingly, our three winners are all promising global leaders and changemakers dedicated to making a difference within their professional fields and beyond.

This cycle, we’re awarding a total of US$14,000 to empower these amazing students’ futures in business and finance. Our investment in their education is an investment in all our futures.

Read on to hear about our amazing winners!

MPOWER’s MBA Scholarship winners are:

$10,000 Grand Prize Winner: Craig Miranda, MBA Student Creating Opportunity Through Infrastructure
India, Yale University

Craig Miranda recalls his childhood experience sheltering from destructive floodwaters in Mumbai in 2005, when he and his family were stranded for days without clean water or electricity.

Now, Craig leverages his experience as a financier, developer, and fund manager to ensure others will never have to suffer such an experience. He’s contributed to multimillion-dollar wind energy and road projects as well as the creation of a C$5.5 billion infrastructure trust.

In the future, his career will focus on both public- and private-sector aspects of infrastructure development. According to Craig, meeting at the intersection of intelligent policy and smart investment decisions “will maximize the number of Indians and people globally with access to quality infrastructure.”

$2,000 Runner-Up: Jyotika Chandhoke, Social Enterprise Specialist Helping Grow Small Businesses
India, University of California, Berkeley

Jyotika Chandhoke wants to reform India’s funding ecosystem and empower small businesses to grow at scale, especially social enterprises. She leverages her experience at J.P. Morgan and the Draper Richards Kaplan Foundation to relieve the capital constraints on such businesses.

With her MBA, Jyotika plans to establish an impact fund that not only supplies funding but also provides access to investor networks, team development, scale strategy, and mentorship resources.

$2,000 Runner-Up: Haggai Chomba, Young Entrepreneur Focused on Impact Investment
Zambia, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Haggai Chomba focuses on global impact investing. He helped design a $180 million COVID-19 relief facility in partnership with the Bank of Zambia to provide over 300 small businesses with affordable credit. He co-founded the company Impactreneurs Africa “to help African social enterprises become investment ready and gain access to catalytic capital at scale.”

Impactreneurs has facilitated $8 million in capital investments in Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, and Uganda. Still, Haggai is looking toward the future. His next step? Leveraging his graduate education to “address pressing problems such as poverty, youth unemployment, and illiteracy.”

Congratulations to the winners! We encourage all international and DACA students to apply to the next round of MPOWER’s MBA Scholarship, which is open through July 15.
